A charitable high school football tournament, “Recovery Bowl: Tackling Substance Use,” is set to take place this Saturday, August 12, kicking off at 5:30 pm at Buccaneer Field. This event, hosted by WakeUp Carolina in collaboration with 1Team1Cause, aims to raise funds and awareness for WakeUp Carolina, a local recovery community organization dedicated to supporting young adults, individuals, and families affected by substance use.

Tickets are available for purchase online and at the venue on the day of the tournament.

The “Recovery Bowl” brings together ten highly competitive high school football teams who have committed to making a difference in the fight against substance use. Participating schools include First Baptist School, Cross High School, Northwood Academy, Dorchester Academy, Pinewood Preparatory School, Porter-Gaud School, St. John’s Christian Academy, Colleton Preparatory Academy, Trinity Collegiate School, and Beaufort Academy. These schools, known for their outstanding athletic programs, have chosen to use their passion for football to contribute to a worthy cause.

All proceeds raised from the tournament will be donated to WakeUp Carolina, enabling the organization to continue its vital mission. WakeUp Carolina is dedicated to providing awareness, promoting education, and creating hope in recovery for those affected by substance use. The funds will support initiatives such as community education programs, recovery support services, counseling resources, and scholarships for individuals seeking treatment or support.

“We are thrilled to host the ‘Recovery Bowl: Tackling Substance Use’ and unite our local and regional high school football teams in a meaningful cause,” said Nanci Steadman Shipman, founder of WakeUp Carolina. “This event not only showcases the athleticism and sportsmanship of our young athletes but also highlights the importance of addressing substance use within our community. The funds raised will have a direct impact on the lives of individuals and families affected by addiction, providing them with the support and resources they need for recovery.”

“We want to reach as many young people as we can,” said David Shelton, 1Team1Cause founder, who lost two sons to drug overdoses. “We had about 1,000 people last year and we expect more than that this time. We just want people in the stands to pick up the messages we’re trying to convey.”

The tournament promises to be an action-packed day filled with thrilling football matches, camaraderie, and a shared commitment to making a positive difference. Spectators can expect an exhilarating atmosphere as these talented teams compete for a greater cause.
