WakeUp Carolina has taken a proactive approach to addressing the xylazine crisis. We recognize the significance of xylazine test strips in preventing overdoses and promoting harm reduction. We have made xylazine test strips available to the community, allowing individuals to access this crucial tool for free. No questions asked. What is Xylazine?
Xylazine is a veterinary sedative primarily used to tranquilize animals, such as horses and large animals, during medical procedures. However, in recent years, it has found its way into the illicit drug market, particularly in combination with opioids. Users may unknowingly consume substances containing xylazine, increasing the risk of overdose due to its potent sedative effects.
Risks Associated with Xylazine Use
The illicit use of xylazine poses significant risks to individuals struggling with substance use disorders. Some of the dangers associated with xylazine use include:
- Respiratory Depression: Xylazine, when combined with opioids, can lead to severe respiratory depression, increasing the risk of respiratory failure and overdose.
- Loss of Consciousness: Xylazine’s sedative properties can cause users to lose consciousness rapidly, leading to accidental injuries or death.

Narcan cannot reverse a xylazine-related overdose; however, we strongly encourage administering Narcan when an overdose has occurred regardless. No harm can happen.
