Carfentanil is an extremely potent synthetic opioid, estimated to be 10,000 times more potent than morphine and 100 times more potent than fentanyl. Originally developed as a tranquilizer for large animals like elephants, carfentanil has found its way into the illicit drug market, posing an alarming threat to public health.

The Dangers

• Lethal Potency: The potency of carfentanil makes it particularly perilous. A tiny amount, as small as a few grains of salt, can be lethal. Its introduction into the illegal drug supply chain has resulted in an increased risk of accidental overdoses.
• Overdose Epidemic: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports a surge in opioid-related overdose deaths, and carfentanil is believed to be a significant contributor to this alarming trend. Its presence in counterfeit pills and illicit drugs has caught many users off guard, leading to tragic consequences.
• First Responders at Risk: The potency of carfentanil not only endangers those who use the drug but also poses a serious threat to first responders. Even incidental contact or inhalation of carfentanil can result in severe health consequences or death, emphasizing the need for extreme caution.
