Our “Amplify Recovery” campaign aims to break the stigma surrounding substance use disorder (SUD) by encouraging open and honest conversations. Through this initiative, we seek to highlight the stories of individuals and families affected by SUD, showcasing their resilience, strength, and hope. By sharing personal experiences and raising awareness, we hope to normalize discussions about SUD and foster a supportive community where everyone feels empowered to seek help and support their loved ones.
Join us in amplifying the voices of recovery and showing the world that addiction is not a moral failing but a health issue that requires understanding. Use the hashtag #AmplifyRecovery to share your story, support others, and stand united in the fight against stigma. Together, we can create a future where everyone has the opportunity to recover and thrive.
At WakeUp Carolina, we take immense pride in advocating for young adults, individuals, and families impacted by substance use. Our mission is to be the voice for the voiceless, a core reason behind our establishment. With nine dedicated staff members across two offices, we cannot do it all alone. We rely on community partners at every level to spread the word about staying alive amid the current opioid crisis plaguing the United States.
This blog is a call to action from our organization, urging for more voices, not financial aid or materials. We need dialogues that address the real devastation substance use in 2024 causes families. People are dying before fully succumbing to addiction—college students experimenting on a night out, bachelor parties celebrating upcoming marriages, or high school students unaware of the substances they are taking.
Substance use in 2024 does not discriminate. We encounter its harsh realities daily, from laced substances to alcoholism. It’s evident where and when we need to advocate. What we need is you. Please speak to people you know about substance use and its impact on your life, how you’ve managed to improve over time, and what it took to get there. Every voice matters, including those who are no longer with us, whose lives were cut short by substances they never intended to be fatal. Now is the time to advocate and loudly demand the resources our communities need.
Recovery advocacy is a vital component of the overall recovery process. It involves individuals, organizations, and communities championing policies, programs, and resources that support people on their journey toward recovery from substance use disorders. Recovery advocacy promotes awareness, reduces stigma, and creates a supportive environment for those struggling with substance use.
One key goal of recovery advocacy is to enhance public understanding of substance use as a treatable medical condition, not a moral failing. This involves challenging stereotypes and misconceptions and emphasizing the importance of evidence-based treatment and support services. By raising awareness about the complex nature of substance use and the challenges faced by individuals in recovery, advocates can help reduce stigma and discrimination, ultimately helping individuals feel more supported and accepted by society.
Advocating for policies and programs that increase access to treatment and support services is another crucial aspect of recovery advocacy. This includes pushing for increased funding for treatment programs, expanding access to medication-assisted treatment, and supporting initiatives that address the social determinants of substance use, such as poverty, trauma, and lack of healthcare access. By championing policies that support recovery, advocates can help create a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals struggling with addiction.
Empowering individuals in recovery to speak out about their experiences is another significant role of recovery advocacy. By sharing personal recovery journeys, individuals can inspire hope, provide support, and reduce feelings of isolation and shame. Recovery advocacy encourages individuals to speak up about their experiences, advocate for their needs, and become active participants in their recovery process.
Beyond individual efforts, recovery advocacy involves collaborating with organizations, communities, and policymakers to promote a recovery-oriented approach to substance use treatment and support services. This includes integrating peer support services, recovery coaching, and other evidence-based practices into addiction treatment programs, and promoting a holistic approach to recovery that addresses the physical, emotional, and social aspects of addiction.
In summary, recovery advocacy is a powerful tool for promoting awareness, reducing stigma, and creating a supportive environment for individuals in recovery from substance use. By advocating for policies, programs, and resources that support recovery, advocates can help build a more inclusive and compassionate society where those struggling with addiction can receive the care they need for lasting recovery.
